We currently use one of two types of breast implants, both FDA-approved in the U.S.

  1. The first type of breast implant is saline filled breast implants with a silicone elastomer shell.
  2. The second type of breast implant is a cohesive silicone gel filled breast implant that also has a silicone elastomer shell.

The type of implant that is right for you will depend on your individual goals and circumstances, and your exam and discussion with our plastic surgeons.

It may be that both are equally good options for you, in which case with the help of our plastic surgeons, the style that best matches your goals will be selected. Some of the differences of saline and silicone implants are listed below:

  • Saline is less expensive, firmer, and has more ripple potential. It also can be put into a smaller incision no matter the size of the implant and is adjustable in volume.
  • Silicone gel is more expensive, tends to be softer and show ripples less, however, it needs a bigger incision the bigger the implant gets. It is also the most natural feeling implant for breast augmentation because the silicone gel is thicker and more the consistency of body tissues.

Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the United States today. The Board Certified surgeons at Edina Plastic Surgery specialize in breast augmentation and will carefully discuss your options for the type of implant, incision and pocket options during your FREE consultation.

At EPS we have the only Vectra XT 3D camera in the state of Minnesota that shows breast augmentation patients incredibly accurate 3D photos of their own bodies with different size and style implants. When patients can see a simulation of their choice of implant on their bodies, it increases their satisfaction level with the procedure and improves their confidence.
