A great deal of focus is placed on the derriere in contemporary culture. The butt is a symbol of fitness, sexuality, femininity and now even masculinity, and plays a vital role in defining a well-proportioned physique. With so much attention on this feature, it’s easy to imagine the discontent and lack of self-esteem that can occur when someone is not happy with the appearance of their rear.

A butt lift is designed to accentuate lackluster curvature by excising excess skin and fat. Patients who may benefit from this procedure have a deflated or saggy backside, potentially resulting from pregnancy or losing a lot of weight. A butt lift is not to be confused with a Brazilian butt lift, which is a different procedure in which fat is taken from another area of the body via liposuction and transferred into the subcutaneous layer of the buttock.

If you’re struggling to achieve the firm, perky buttocks you desire despite healthy eating and exercise, a butt lift in Edina, Minnesota, could help you find confidence in your figure once more. Drs. Leigh and Stewart are excited to help you sculpt a body you adore. Contact our office at 952-925-1765 or through our online contact form to request a consultation.

Personalizing Your Butt Lift Procedure

Every procedure at Edina Plastic Surgery is tailored to the patient based on his or her unique anatomy. In the case of a butt lift, your surgeon will choose between several techniques and approaches from when designing your personal treatment plan. Four incision locations are commonly used in this procedure:

Upper Buttock Incision

This incision is made at the top of the buttock, typically inside the bikini or underwear line. This incision provides thorough access and has the benefit of being hidden by most swimsuits and underwear.

Lower Buttock Incision

This technique uses the natural fold where the buttock meets the thigh to hide any postoperative scarring. This option also affords good access to the gluteal region but, in some cases, may show scarring when a bathing suit is worn.

Between the Buttocks Incision

In this technique, the incision is placed between the buttock cheeks, hidden in the crease. This is a very inconspicuous placement that makes it easy to cover scarring in virtually any clothing and swimwear.

Liposuction may be used with any butt lift technique for improved contouring. The right technique for you depends on where your excess skin and fat are located.

Auto-Buttock Augmentation

The auto-buttock augmentation is a custom designed buttock lift that preserves deep soft tissue and tightens the skin over the preserved tissue to allow a rounding out of the buttock shape using your own tissues. The incision most often follows the direction of the bikini bottom diagonally across the buttock and also lifts the lateral thigh.

Deciding If a Butt Lift Is Right for You

The buttocks can be very difficult to shape with diet and exercise. Excess skin and fat in this area can add unwanted bulk and frustrate your efforts to achieve a more sculpted body. You might be a good butt lift candidate if aging, pregnancy or weight loss have left you with loose skin, excess fat, cellulite and sagginess around your buttocks. Ideal candidates are nonsmokers and have reached a stable, healthy weight.

People who have chronic medical conditions or are in generally poor health are typically not good candidates for body contouring procedures. People who cannot take sufficient time off to recover may also be advised not to undergo butt lift surgery. The location of the incisions can make it difficult to sit or rest in typical positions, making it essential to set aside time to heal in comfort. Your surgeon will take a variety of factors into consideration when determining whether you should undergo this procedure.

Preparing for Your Butt Lift

During an initial consultation with your Edina plastic surgeon, your goals, concerns and questions will be discussed in as much detail as you would like. It’s a good idea to come prepared with topics you would like to talk about and a clear picture of what you would like to achieve through this surgery. It is important to be open and honest during this consultation so your surgeon can make the most effective recommendations.

Once your surgeon understands your objectives, he or she may suggest additional related procedures. A butt lift is often combined with liposuction, a body lift or a tummy tuck. Each of these procedures helps accentuate the other’s results, creating a much more balanced figure with beautiful proportions. Although combining procedures might seem more expensive, it is more cost-effective because you only have to pay for things like facility fees and anesthesia fees once. It also reduces the total amount of time that you are under anesthesia and the total amount of time you must set aside for recovery.

After considering your goals, adjunct procedures, medical history and unique anatomy, your surgeon will work with you to develop a detailed surgical plan. You will receive a set of instructions to follow in the days and weeks leading up to your procedure. These might be as simple as increasing hydration or refraining from taking certain vitamins, but it is imperative you follow your surgeon’s guidelines to prepare for your buttock lift procedure.

The Butt Lift Procedure

Buttock lift procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in our fully accredited and equipped surgery center. Please arrange for someone your trust to drive you home after the surgery and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours of your recovery.

You will receive anesthetic medications to keep you comfortable during your surgery. In most cases, we recommend general anesthesia because it allows for the most relaxed patient experience. Your surgeon will follow the surgical plan agreed upon before surgery. An incision will be made in your desired location so excess skin and fat can be removed. Additional fat may be treated with liposuction. The underlying tissue will be tightened and reshaped with internal sutures, then the skin will be smoothed over the new contour of your buttock.

Drains may be inserted into the surgical area to remove fluid that accumulates within the incisions. You will then be transferred to our recovery room to await discharge.

Butt Lift Recovery and Results

You may have some pain when the anesthesia wears off. You may also have some redness, bruising and swelling after the surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to manage the discomfort and provide you with a list of postoperative instructions. To ensure you have the speediest, healthiest recovery possible, you must follow all the instructions carefully. Failure to do so could result in poor wound healing or more noticeable scarring.

Buttock lift surgery can be quite extensive and may require two to three weeks of recovery before you can resume regular activities. It takes three to six months for the tissues to settle and the swelling to resolve. The incision lines will continue to mature for up to a year. Being in good health and having help after surgery will accelerate the healing process, improve your results and reduce the risk of complications.

The results of your buttock lift surgery will be long-lasting. You can expect to have a smoother, more defined derriere and a more balanced physique. Over time, the tissues of your buttocks can continue to change due to aging, weight fluctuations and gravity. You will enjoy your new look longer if you maintain your weight and keep up a healthy lifestyle.
