Did you always know you wanted to become a plastic surgeon? What inspired you to pursue this specialty of medicine?
ANSWER
From the beginning, I was certain about my desire to pursue a career in surgery, although I hadn’t specified the field. It wasn’t until I encountered various specialties that I truly discerned my passion for plastic surgery. The extensive diversity within plastic surgery, encompassing areas such as burns, reconstruction, and cosmetic procedures, greatly attracted me to this field.

What inspires you most about the field of plastic surgery?
ANSWER
What truly motivates me in the realm of plastic surgery is the array of patients. The ability to transform, rectify, and enhance the form and shape, ultimately helping individuals feel better about themselves, serves as a profound inspiration for me.
QUESTION
You were an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Surgery for nearly 20 years. Why was it important to you to be both an educator and provider? How has this experience influenced you as a plastic surgeon?
ANSWER
I found great satisfaction in instructing medical students and residents, viewing it as a means to give back, inspired by the generosity of those who paved the way for me.
QUESTION
You have partnered with hundreds of breast cancer patients throughout your career by providing breast reconstruction surgery. You have even taught breast reconstruction classes at local hospitals and contributed to the Pay it Forward program, which helps breast cancer patients with daily expenses. How has this experience changed you as a person and influenced the surgeon you are?
ANSWER
It is truly humbling and enlightening to accompany someone on their journey through breast cancer. Witnessing their spiritual and emotional growth throughout the process is a profound experience. At times, these patients spend more time with me than with their oncologists.

What is your favorite plastic surgery to perform and why?
ANSWER
I don’t have a specific procedure that I favor; rather, I enjoy interventions that enhance the appearance and restore what time and aging may have altered. My goal is to contribute to individuals feeling better about the reflection they see in the mirror every day.

Your career has a strong undercurrent of helping those in need and underserved populations, especially children who require cleft lip and palate surgery. How has this philanthropic work changed you as a person, and how has it influenced you as a surgeon?
ANSWER
Acknowledge our shared humanity, recognizing that some are born into more prosperous societies than others. It is essential for all of us to practice kindness and support each other. Having the privilege to expose my children and myself to various parts of the world and those in need is a valuable experience.

ANSWER
Among the cherished gifts I’ve received from my patients are a heartfelt poem, a handcrafted cabin lamp, a personalized Superman cape, and a specially made dog bed.
