A tummy tuck, which is also called an abdominoplasty, is one of the most common body contouring procedures performed by the board-certified plastic surgeons at Edina Plastic Surgery.
The procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and a repair or joining of the separated abdominal muscles. Tummy tucks can be as effective for men as they are for women. Plastic procedures overall are becoming more and more popular with the male demographic and a growing number of men are choosing to have tummy tucks.
Weight loss surgeries are on the rise for both men and women and they are another reason why tummy tucks for men are gaining in popularity; men are choosing the procedure to tighten and tone their midsection.

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is in good medical health and has realistic expectations of what the procedure can and cannot accomplish. He should also be at his ideal body weight. One of the reasons for this is that a tummy tuck will not improve the appearance of the mid-section on men with large amounts of intra-abdominal fat located around their organs. Men who fit this description need to diet and exercise before they would be a good surgical candidate.
There are several techniques to perform tummy tuck surgery on both males and females, and our board-certified plastic surgeons will decide the best technique for each patient based on their anatomy and aesthetic goals. In most tummy tuck procedures, the surgeon will tighten the abdominal muscles as well as removing the excess skin and fat. The incision made during a tummy tuck is in the lower part of the abdomen, typically below the belt line. In some cases the surgeon will suggest that the male patient have additional liposuction to the waist at the same time the tummy tuck is performed to improve the love handles and the overall result.

At Edina Plastic Surgery, tummy tuck procedures are done in our modern and accredited outpatient surgery center which is attached to our clinic. The surgery can take anywhere between one and five hours depending on the exact procedure. No overnight stay is required; however, in rare cases complications can require admission to a hospital.
Most body contouring procedures are done under general anesthesia. Patients will need someone to drive them home and care for them for at least 24 hours after the surgery; assistance with daily activities may also be necessary during the next few days.
Of the many procedures performed by our surgeons, tummy tucks can provide the best results and the most satisfied patients. Men have been delighted with their new taut waistlines and torsos. Post-procedure, all men and women are encouraged to control their weight and to exercise after recovery to maintain the surgical results and an improved state of wellness.
