Over the past decade, more men than ever before are turning to plastic surgery to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in the United States in 2023, a number that continues to grow. From Botox® to body contouring surgery, men are becoming increasingly comfortable with embracing self-care and investing in their appearance and overall well-being.
At Edina Plastic Surgery, this trend is especially evident. Our board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in helping men achieve results that align with their goals and lifestyles. Whether you’re a dad looking to reclaim your pre-fatherhood physique or simply a man ready to reclaim your self-confidence after weight loss, here are the three most requested procedures our male patients choose to have included in their Daddy Do-Over surgery.
What Is a Daddy Do‑Over?
“Just like a Mommy Makeover, a Daddy Do‑Over is not exclusive to fathers and is not a single surgery but a combination of customized procedures for men performed during the same surgical session,” explains Dr. Christine Stewart, a board-certified plastic surgeon and partner at Edina Plastic Surgery. “It’s designed to address the physical changes that often come with age, hormonal imbalances, or weight fluctuations in men. Many of the Daddy Do-Overs I perform include male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery), liposuction, and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), although procedures can be tailored to suit each man’s specific needs.”
“The benefit of combining surgeries is that it provides a more comprehensive transformation with only one recovery period, allowing men to efficiently enhance multiple areas of their physique at once and feel more confident in their appearance,” adds Dr. Stewart. “Stacking complementary surgeries can also significantly reduce cost because a patient is only paying for facility fees and anesthesia for a single operation, not multiple visits.”
#1 – Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)
Restore Chest Definition & Confidence
What it is:
Gynecomastia is the development of enlarged breast tissue in men, and it’s incredibly common. It may be due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, aging, or even certain medications. “It’s very frustrating for men,” says Dr. Stewart. “They’re working out, watching their diet, but they just can’t reduce that feminine puffiness or roundness in their chest.”
How it’s done:
“A male breast reduction begins with a comprehensive evaluation that includes a medical history and risk factors,” says Dr. Stewart. From there, your treatment plan depends on the type of tissue present:
- If the tissue is soft and fatty, liposuction alone may be effective. This procedure involves making small incisions along the lower edge of the areola or the lateral chest wall, through which a cannula is inserted to remove fat.
- If the tissue is dense and glandular, surgical excision is required. This is often done through an incision along the lower half of the areola and may be combined with liposuction for optimal contour.
- If there is loose or stretched skin, “excision of some of the overlying skin may be recommended,” says Dr. Stewart. “This does produce more significant and visible scars, but it’s often necessary for the best result.”
Results:
After a male breast reduction, men can expect a flatter, firmer chest with more masculine proportions. Most men report feeling more comfortable in T-shirts, dress shirts, and even shirtless after surgery. The emotional impact of this transformation is often profound. ‘It’s amazing how life-changing this procedure can be for a man’s confidence, especially when going shirtless,’ adds Dr. Stewart.
#2 – Liposuction for Men
Sculpt, Define & Target Stubborn Fat
What it is:
Liposuction is one of the most requested plastic surgeries for men. It targets stubborn fat that doesn’t budge with diet or exercise—especially in areas like the abdomen, flanks (love handles), chest, back, and under the chin.
“Men may develop resistant pockets of fat for several reasons, ranging from rare congenital conditions to poor lifestyle and diet choices,” says Dr. Stewart. “Weight fluctuations, a drop in testosterone production, stress from major life events — it can seem like almost everything in life can contribute to fat accumulation. Even if a man is vigilant about his diet and exercise, all of our metabolisms begin to slow down as we age. In these cases, liposuction is often the only treatment that can provide relief to those patients,” advises Dr. Stewart. “It is highly effective for common problem areas on men including the abdomen, love handles, and even back fat.”
How it’s done:
Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia. A tumescent solution is injected to minimize bleeding and discomfort. A thin cannula is then inserted through small incisions to dislodge and suction out the fat. At Edina Plastic Surgery, we offer LipoAI, a cutting-edge, laser-assisted liposuction device that allows for enhanced precision and promotes skin tightening as fat is removed.
Men can expect a more defined, athletic-looking silhouette after liposuction surgery. “Fat cells removed during liposuction are gone for good,” says Dr. Stewart. “This makes it easier for patients to maintain their results long-term with a healthy lifestyle.”
#3 – Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty for Men)
Strengthen the Core and Reveal a More Contoured Midsection
What it is:
“A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgery designed to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen,” says Dr. Stewart. “It utilizes precise incisions and skin redraping techniques to restore a taut, more defined, and youthful appearance to your midsection.”
For many men, especially those who have lost weight or experienced abdominal stretching due to aging, the procedure can dramatically improve abdominal shape and strength.
How it’s done:
- A low horizontal incision is made (hidden below the belt line).
- If necessary, the abdominal muscles are tightened using internal sutures.
- Excess skin is trimmed and redraped.
- In many cases, liposuction is added to enhance contour at the flanks and upper abdomen.
- The belly button may be repositioned for a natural look.
Results:
Expect a flatter, firmer abdominal area and a tighter core after tummy tuck surgery. Many men report improvements in posture, ease of movement, and a better fit in clothes. “Tummy tucks can be incredibly impactful for male patients,” says Dr. Stewart. “It’s not just about removing skin—it’s about restoring strength and balance to the entire midsection.”
