Without any words your eyes convey a wide range of emotion and information. Which is why we don’t want our eyes to appear tired, aged or even angry. Eyelid surgery and treatments using Botox® and dermal fillers can result in dramatic improvements to the eyes, making them look more youthful and refreshed.

If you are interested in enhancing the look of your eye area, here are some options to consider that are available at Edina Plastic Surgery and Skin Artisans at Edina Plastic Surgery:

EYELID SURGERY

At Edina Plastic Surgery our board-certified surgeons have extensive experience in eyelid rejuvenation.

Over time, upper eyelids often develop an excessively full or droopy appearance, and lower lids may develop puffy fat pads and loose skin. Surgery for these conditions can provide a more rejuvenated appearance – and can improve vision when skin is heavy enough to block the eyes.

Sometimes called “eyelid lift” or “eyelid tuck”, eyelid surgery’s medical name is blepharoplasty. This procedure can be conducted on the upper and/or lower eyelids to improve appearance by removing excess fat pads or skin.

The approach your surgeon will recommend for eyelid surgery is based on your needs and goals. During the initial consultation, our surgeons assess whether a blepharoplasty may be beneficial for you and, if so, what type of surgery will provide the desired results. Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis (requiring no overnight stay) in our fully accredited onsite surgery center.

For an upper lid blepharoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision along the natural skin crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin is removed and some fatty tissue may be excised. For the lower lids, an incision is made just beneath the lash line, extending to the crow’s feet region of the eye. Excess skin and fat can then be removed.

The lower lid can also be improved using a “transconjunctival blepharoplasty”. In this technique, an incision is made along the inner lining of the lower lid where it will not be visible. The procedure allows treatment of the fat pads, though no skin can be removed, and works best for people who have younger, elastic skin.

Eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under a light general anesthesia, in which you are completely asleep during the procedure.

Using the most cutting edge techniques of blepharoplasty, the surgeons at Edina Plastic Surgery often remove little, if any, fat from the eyelids. Instead, the fat is repositioned into areas that appear more sunken. This is very helpful in the area of the “tear trough” just below the lower lid and at the lid-cheek junction. In addition, the muscle of the lower lid is often lifted to help smooth the contour of the upper cheek and lid.

BROW LIFT

A forehead lift or “brow lift” is a procedure that improves the heavy and drooping appearance that can occur in the brows, forehead and upper eyelids.

The passage of time affects the facial appearance and some sagging, droop or heaviness typically occurs in the brow region and upper eyelids. In addition, individuals who have a relatively low brow position naturally, even at a young age, may be unhappy with an appearance that says they are tired, angry or sad. In these cases, a forehead or brow lift can produce a positive and pleasant change.

A brow lift procedure involves lifting the forehead and brow to a more optimal position. The lifting also tends to “open-up” the area around the eyes to reveal a more youthful and attractive appearance.

Sometimes patients will request a consult for upper eyelid blepharoplasty (upper lid lift) and actually will benefit more from a forehead lift. Other times, a blepharoplasty or even a full face lift is considered along with a forehead lift. A consultation with one of our board-certified and highly experienced plastic surgeons can help you determine what is needed to achieve your goals.

BOTOX® FOR THE EYE AREA

Botox is a well-known and popular anti-aging treatment that provides amazing results. There are many ways the injector technician experts at the Skin Artisans at Edina Plastic Surgery can improve the eye area using Botox.

Crow’s Feet: If the crow’s feet around your eyes are dynamic, there will be a significant improvement with Botox to this area. However, if the crow’s feet are mostly static and the results of photodynamic and chronological aging, the improvement may be disappointing.

Lower Eyelid: We can treat the jellyroll area under the eyelid. (It is most noticeable in certain individuals when they smile broadly.) When Botox is injected into the middle of the lower eyelid it makes the patient’s eye look more open and youthful.

Eyebrow (Lateral): Botox can be injected to reduce eyelid hooding to produce some of the benefits of a lateral brow lift.

DERMAL FILLERS FOR THE EYE AREA

Dermal fillers promote hydration of the skin as well as restore volume to the skin and its underlying foundations. The expert injectors at the Skin Artisans at Edina Plastic Surgery apply injectable gel under the skin to provide a smooth, natural look and feel and use dermal fillers to treat crow’s feet wrinkles and/or tear troughs.

Skin Artisans’ technicians assure minimal discomfort during any dermal filler procedure by applying a topical anesthetic cream to the treatment site prior to injecting. In addition, all fillers used have lidocaine in them further ensuring your comfort.
