More and more men of every age are opting for plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures to improve confidence and body image. The number of men seeking plastic surgery procedures in 2017 was at an all-time high of 1.4 million according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Here are some of the top reasons why men chose plastic surgery:

  • To stay competitive in their careers
  • Build their self confidence
  • Feel better about their bodies
  • Preventative steps for aging

“Men should do their homework and choose a board-certified or board-eligible plastic surgeon,” says Dr. Robert Wilke from Edina Plastic Surgery. “A board-certified or board-eligible plastic surgeon has extensive training and is best equipped to offer each patient the right choice of procedure to get the most natural looking results.”

Men are feeling more confident about visiting plastic surgeons to discuss a wide range of procedures. When men have a procedure on an area of their body that they are not happy with, their confidence rises and impacts how they see themselves.

Plastic surgery does not have the same taboo for men that it did years ago because socially there is a greater sense of acceptance for physical body changes from elective plastic surgery. Today more men are seeing the importance of taking care of themselves in order to look their best, and one way to do that is through cosmetic procedures.

The rise in plastic surgery procedures among men is driven in part by the aging of the baby boom generation, but men of all ages, even those under 30 are interested in body contouring procedures.

Recent statistics regarding plastic surgery for men have shown a five year rise in procedures such as liposuction which has had an increase of 23%, tummy tucks which have increased by 12%, and male breast reductions which have increased about 30%.

Statistics show that the majority of younger men tend to focus on enhancing their bodies, while older men are showing greater interest in having minimally-invasive procedures to take years off of their faces. In 2017 nearly 100,000 men had filler injections, which is a number that is up a whopping 99% since the year 2000. The popularity of Botox for men has also skyrocketed in popularity. Many men believe that their careers and productivity can suffer if they look tired, so cosmetic facial procedures can be just the solution that they are looking for.

Because they see it as a key to remaining competitive in the workplace, many male patients are reporting a desire to look younger. This trend to look good for the sake of a career is often called “the executive edge”. When men look as young as they feel, the resulting rise in confidence benefits their careers and lives.
