Combination of breast lift with implants

After losing a lot of weight or having children, many women feel the desire to look and feel younger. Some choose to have a breast lift combined with an implant to enhance their appearance and restore their self-confidence. If a woman’s breasts are small or have lost volume – for example, after pregnancy – breast implants inserted in conjunction with a breast lift can increase both their firmness and their size. The board certified plastic surgeons at Edina Plastic Surgery are experts in the breast lift with breast implant procedure.

Adding a breast lift to an augmentation can maximize results

Breast lifts typically involve lifting the breast and eliminating excess skin while moving the nipple and areola into a new, more natural position. The end result is a perkier more youthful look and is very much appreciated among those women with sagging breasts.

Combining a breast lift with implants is a good way to get the maximum results from breast lift surgery. When breast lifts are combined with an augmentation, the patient’s breasts will increase in cup size and the results will generally be more pleasing than the results from a breast lift alone.

Deciding on the correct breast implant type

The type of implant that patients choose will affect how they look and feel after the surgery, so it’s important to select the correct option. Two types of implants are currently available and FDA-approved in the United States: saline-filled implants with a silicone elastomer shell and cohesive silicone gel filled implants with a silicone elastomer shell. The type of implant that is right for you will depend on your individual goals and circumstances.

  1. A saline implant is less expensive, firmer and has more ripple potential. It can be placed with a smaller incision no matter the size of the implant and is adjustable in volume.
  2. A silicone gel implant is more expensive, tends to be softer and shows ripples less. This implant requires a bigger incision for larger implants. It is the most natural feeling implant because the silicone gel is thicker and more similar to the consistency of body tissues.

Factors to consider when choosing the right implant size and shape

When considering the appropriate breast implant for a breast lift patient, our surgeons take many factors into account including shape (round or teardrop-shaped), texture (smooth or textured shell) profile and overall size. The appropriate size should be based on body proportions, posture and skin elasticity. Our surgeons discuss these options with each patient.

A breast lift with implants is a complex procedure

This procedure is more complicated than either a breast augmentation or a breast lift surgery alone because there are many changes being made to the breasts at one time. There is also a higher incidence of revisions when a breast lift is combined with implants.

It is very important for patients to consult board-certified plastic surgeons such as Dr. Nathan Leigh, Dr. Robert Wilke and Dr. Michael Philbin of Edina Plastic Surgery. They all have a great deal of experience with this procedure and will take the time to discuss the risks and benefits with each patient.
