Top Trends to Watch for in 2020

The New Year is a time for reflection, reassessment, and self-reinvention for millions of people all over the world. With the dawn of an entirely new decade in 2020, the resolution to improve aspects of our lives like our health and appearance may feel even more significant. If you are considering plastic surgery in 2020 to enhance your face or body and elevate your level of confidence, know that you are not alone. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), almost 18 million Americans underwent surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in 2018. This number is nearly a quarter of a million increase from 2017, and analysts anticipate a similar jump once 2019 data is compiled. With each passing year, the shroud of taboo and secrecy surrounding Plastic Surgery continues to weaken as more people pursue it and openly share the positive impact it has had on their live.

Although breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose job), blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), and tummy tucks continue to be the top five requested plastic surgeries year after year, the new decade marks some exciting trends to watch. Just as any industry changes throughout the years, the face of plastic surgery is also evolving. This rapid momentum reinforces how essential it is to partner with a surgeon who is consistently learning and advancing their skills to keep pace.

Here are some of the more interesting plastic surgery trends you can expect to see more of in 2020.

LIFTS LEAD THE LIST

The plastic surgery world has experienced a significant jump in demand for lifting procedures over the last ten years. Some of this increase can be traced to advancements in surgical techniques, but the majority may be attributed to shifting preferences from patients and a broader acceptance of plastic surgery.

Although breast implants continue to be extremely popular, many women opt to go with a smaller implant or rely solely on breast lift surgery to restore a more youthful positioning and look to their breasts. Also, advancements in fat grafting and transfer allow surgeons to naturally and subtly enhance the volume of your breasts during your lift without the need for implants.

Another lifting procedure that has gained much popularity, especially over the past five years, is butt lift surgery. This trend may be due to celebrity culture or a social paradigm shift to embrace your curves. Regardless, the ideal derriere shape and size have definitely changed, and buttocks enhancement requests have skyrocketed. Whether performed alone to address a sagging or flattened buttocks resulting from aging or weight loss, or combined with fat grafting to also replenish volume and shape, expect to see all procedures that revolve around your rear to continue in popularity.

“Bingo arms,” “bat wings,” or your “second wave goodbye”…. Do any of these names sound familiar for the loose, sagging skin on your upper arm? Of any lifting procedure, arm lift surgery, or Brachioplasty, has enjoyed the most dramatic rise. There has been over a 5,000% increase in this surgery within the last decade alone. Why? Some attribute the growth to changes in fashion and a focus on shapely, defined, female arms (thank you, Michelle Obama). Regardless, more and more women are deciding that the scarring that results from arm lift surgery is justified in exchange for slimmer, more youthful appearing arms.

“TWEAKS” TRUMP TRANSFORMATIONS

Where once, a woman or man may have waited until a milestone birthday to pursue a full surgical facelift, we now see millions of people opting to fine-tune and “tweak” their appearance with smaller surgeries through the decades. This new treatment approach of more minor procedures compiled over time, instead of one big transformation at 55 or 60 years old, has grown in popularity over the last decade. Some attribute this to the rise of Botox and dermal fillers, which can keep people looking younger for longer and also be used in tandem with smaller surgeries throughout the years. This progressive approach that allows for subtle and graceful transitioning from year to year can yield results that are continuously fresh and natural-looking.

THE MOMMY MAKEOVER MOVEMENT

The combination of tummy tuck surgery and breast enhancement surgery, sometimes called Mommy Makeover Surgery, has always been popular for women after having children. In fact, abdominoplasty and breast augmentation are forecasted to be in the top two of the most requested procedures for 2020. Even still, renewed social acceptance and popularity have been observed with these combination surgeries.

As more women wait to have children until they are well into their careers and financially stable, more have a disposable income to put towards surgery after baby. These new mothers have also grown up in an era that celebrates taking care of and investing in yourself. They appreciate the sense of empowerment that comes from feeling confident about how you look and see surgery as a very justifiable expense.

KEEP’IN IT REAL

There was a period in time during which it was extremely common for a patient to bring their plastic surgeon a magazine clipping of their favorite celebrity to illustrate how they wanted their nose or breasts to look like. According to many plastic surgeons, this time may be coming to a swift end. The requests for plastic surgery to emulate a celebrity’s appearance or features have decreased dramatically.

This renewed desire to look natural, youthful, and authentic to what makes your appearance unique is, perhaps, the most exciting trend to plastic surgeons themselves. Although every surgeon aspires towards achieving exceptional surgical outcomes, most find your renewed self-confidence, overall happiness, and enjoyment of your life their biggest accomplishment and goal.
