Liposuction has become one of the most frequently performed procedures for fat removal. It can be done as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or even facelift. Liposuction is an exciting technique with tremendous potential to shape the body, but has limitations based on the skin quality and planned volume removal.
Choosing this Surgery
The typical liposuction procedure location may include the neck, arms, back, abdomen, thighs, knees or ankles – and sometimes all or a combination of these areas. Because liposuction is a shaping procedure and not a weight loss procedure, not every area can be treated with liposuction. For example, a large abdomen may have fat inside the abdominal wall, which is not available for liposuction and fat removal. Liposuction will neither help smooth the cellulite areas of the skin, nor make it worse.
Preparing for Surgery
The ideal liposuction candidate is a person who is in good health and is close to his or her weight goal, yet has areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Surgeries and recoveries are more successful for patients who are as healthy and strong as possible.

Surgery will generally take from one to three hours and you will wear a compression garment for about three to six weeks after surgery. A return to completely normal activity will occur around four to six weeks, but swelling to some extent may be present up to nine months. It is important to follow post-surgery instructions for a complete recovery and to get back to a normal lifestyle.
At Edina Plastic Surgery, our surgeons perform liposuction surgery with anesthesia to allow for the most comprehensive fat removal possible. For larger areas, a general anesthetic will be used for the procedure. While local anesthesia can be used for smaller areas, there are limits to the areas that can safely be done with this technique. Our liposuction surgery services are conducted in our onsite, fully accredited and licensed specialty facility.
What You Should Know
For patient safety concerns, fat removal is limited to five liters or less when conducted on an outpatient basis. For larger volumes, it may be necessary to spend the night in the hospital (as an inpatient) for observation and fluid management.
There are many techniques available for fat suction, some involving dissolution of the fat before aspiration. The board certified surgeons of Edina Plastic Surgery in Minneapolis are knowledgeable in all these methods and will be able to review your options with you. Together, we can create a safe, effective and realistic plan to help you achieve your goals.
