As we age, our soft facial tissues slowly drop, creating jowls, lines, creases and a sagging neck. Facelift surgery is designed to correct facial aging and the associated structural changes. Our surgeons use the most advanced techniques to make the face and neck look more youthful, while maintaining a natural appearance and creating the best version of you.
Our comprehensive facelift surgery approach addresses the skin, underlying fat, fascia and muscles to achieve the best and most long-lasting result. A facelift involves the neck and lower two-thirds of the face. Other procedures, such as eyelid surgery, brow lift, laser resurfacing or volume enhancement with fat transfer, are often performed in conjunction with facelift surgery.
All of us show signs of aging at different rates, so there is not a specific age range when a facelift is appropriate. We will talk through your concerns and goals during your complimentary consultation. The resulting plan may lead to a facelift surgery – or maybe to a less invasive or non-invasive treatment option. Our onsite skin clinic, Skin Artisans, provides dermal fillers, laser treatments and a range of exceptional skin care services.
Our goal is to make you look your best. Our techniques are designed to make you look younger, healthy and completely natural – without the telltale signs of surgery. Our patients often say they hear “You look great!” from people who don’t realize they’ve had surgery.
Choosing this surgery
There are two main types of facelifts: the classic facelift and the modified or mini facelift. The classic facelift provides a more complete lift of the neck, in addition to the face. The mini lift uses a shorter incision and is appropriate for patients who don’t need a neck lift. The mini lift still provides excellent lift of the mid-face region and jowls.
Preparing for surgery
A pre-operative physical exam must be performed by your regular physician to ensure you are well enough for surgery. The surgery is conducted at our surgery center, a fully accredited facility with essential equipment and staff. While it is possible to perform a facelift with IV sedation anesthesia, patients are generally more comfortable when a general anesthesia is used.
You’ll want to arrange to have someone drive you home from surgery – and to care for you at home the first day and night.
As with any surgery, complications can occur. With a facelift, complications are rare and usually temporary. They include a hematoma (bleeding), nerve injury, wound healing problems and abnormal scarring. Touch-up procedures are sometimes necessary. You surgeon will discuss risks during your consultation.

About the surgery
Local anesthesia is injected where the incisions are made to help with recovery and minimize post-surgery pain. Some areas of the face are treated with liposuction and the fat is injected into areas that could benefit from plumping. Excess skin is removed and the incision closed over small drains.
About two hours after your surgery, your surgeon will examine you to prepare for your discharge. Our recovery nurse will ensure that your caregiver understands the post-operative care instructions. A large head dressing will be worn overnight. In rare instances an overnight hospital admission will be required so that the first night of recovery can be monitored.
You will be seen in our clinic the following day. Your surgeon or nurse will remove your drains and ensure that your recovery is on track. While no bandages are usually required, you will look bruised and swollen. If you have stitches, they will be removed within the next week.
Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions regarding activity guidelines and when you can return to work – most likely in one to three weeks after surgery.
Our facelift patients appreciate their newly refreshed look. The best procedures make patients look younger and natural rather than different or “operated on.”
||The location of the incisions will be discussed pre operatively and do vary based on the patient’s anatomy, hairline, hairstyle, etc. Local anesthesia is injected to help with recovery and incisions are made. Skin and deeper structures are mobilized and elevated. Some areas are treated with liposuction and fat is often injected into other areas.

|| Recovery is usually fairly comfortable. The patient will wear a large head dressing overnight. Your Edina Plastic Surgeon will check on you before discharge and our recovery nurse will assure that your caregiver understands the post-operative care instructions.
