Back to Dr. Nathan Leigh

Without any words, your eyes convey so much emotion and information. You don’t want your eyes to appear tired, aged or even angry. Eyelid surgery can help you project a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Our surgeons have extensive experience in eyelid rejuvenation and have provided this type of expert care for patients from the metro area, greater Minnesota and beyond.

Over time, upper eyelids often develop an excessively full or droopy appearance, and lower lids may develop puffy fat pads and loose skin. Surgery for these conditions can provide a more rejuvenated appearance – and can improve vision when skin is heavy enough to block the eyes.

Choosing this surgery

Sometimes called “eyelid lift” or “eyelid tuck,” eyelid surgery’s medical name is blepharoplasty. This procedure can be conducted on the upper and/or lower eyelids to improve appearance by removing excess fat pads or skin.

Preparing for surgery

The approach your surgeon will recommend for eyelid surgery is based on your needs and goals. During the initial consultation, our surgeons assess whether a blepharoplasty may be beneficial for you and, if so, what type of surgery will provide the desired results. Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis (requiring no overnight stay) in our fully accredited onsite surgery center.

About the surgery

For an upper lid blepharoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision along the natural skin crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin is removed and some fatty tissue may be excised. For the lower lids, an incision is made just beneath the lash line, extending to the crows feet region of the eye. Excess skin and fat can then be removed.

The lower lid can also be improved using a “transconjunctival blepharoplasty.” In this technique, an incision is made along the inner lining of the lower lid where it will not be visible. The procedure allows treatment of the fat pads, though no skin can be removed, and works best for people who have younger, elastic skin.

Eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under a light general anesthesia, in which you are completely asleep during the procedure.

Using the most cutting edge techniques of blepharoplasty, our Edina Plastic Surgery surgeons often remove little, if any, fat from the eyelids. Instead, the fat is repositioned into areas that appear more sunken. This is very helpful in the area of the “tear trough” just below the lower lid and at the lid-cheek junction. In addition, the muscle of the lower lid is often lifted to help smooth the contour of the upper cheek and lid.

Patients can expect some swelling and bruising of the eyelids after surgery; this gradually resolves in one or two weeks – although sometimes swelling lasts longer. Ice packs (bags of frozen peas work great) are recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours. Your eyes may feel dry after surgery and lubricating drops are routinely used for at least the first one or two weeks.

Scars are usually not noticeable once they mature, but suboptimal scarring is a potential risk. Surgical revisions are sometimes needed to optimize results. Other complications, although rare, are long-term dry eyes, vision problems or ectropion where the lower lid develops a pulled-down appearance.

You cannot perform any strenuous activities for the first two weeks. Most people feel ready to return to work after seven to 10 recovery days, although mild swelling and bruising may still be visible. Full recovery from the surgery – and the best results – may require six to eight weeks, although additional improvements may continue for another six months.

The surgeons at Edina Plastic Surgery specialize in a host of cosmetic procedures involving the eyes and face. As a complement to our surgery services, we have a comprehensive medical skincare salon, Skin Artisans, right in our clinic. We offer easy access for patients who want state-of-the-art skin care, as well as safe and convenient minimally invasive procedures.

Our skincare salon

Skin Artisans, our skincare salon, offers injectable fillers, Botox®®, chemical peels and laser treatments, as well as larger surgical procedures. Your doctor may recommend a less invasive treatment, possibly in place of surgery, if it would be more appropriate for your individual situation. Other procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift, can also be done in conjunction with eyelid surgery to obtain optimal improvements.
