Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is one of the most common body contouring procedures performed at Edina Plastic Surgery. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen – and a repair or joining of the separated abdominal muscles. This creates a smoother and firmer abdominal profile.

It is best to achieve at least close to your goal weight through a good diet and exercise program prior to proceeding with surgery. Often, it is not possible to achieve your desired shape with diet and exercise alone. Many people are at their ideal weight and have an excellent fitness level, but are still unable to achieve the appearance they desire. This is often from loose skin or separated abdominal muscles from weight changes or pregnancy.

About this surgery

Tummy tuck procedures are done in our modern and accredited outpatient surgery center, which is attached to our clinic. No overnight stay is required; however, in rare cases complications can require admission to a hospital. If admission is required, the cost of the hospitalization will not be covered by insurance.

Most body contouring procedures are done under general anesthesia and the majority of patients go home the same day. You’ll need someone to drive you home and to care for you for at least 24 hours after the surgery; assistance with daily activities may also be necessary during the next few days.

The surgery can take anywhere between one and five hours depending on the exact procedure. Most patients who have a tummy tuck performed at Edina Plastic Surgery recover without any complications. However, there are risks associated with any surgery.

Complications, like blood clots or severe allergic reactions, are extremely rare but can occur. Also rare are excessive bleeding, wound healing problems and abnormal scarring. Your surgeon will discuss possible complications with you during your initial consultation.

With a full tummy tuck, an incision extending from hip to hip and an incision around the belly button will be made. For mini and modified tummy tucks, the incision is somewhat shorter and the belly button is not impacted.

The skin and fat is lifted off the abdominal wall. The muscles are usually tightened and excess skin is removed. A new opening for the belly button is made, drains are placed and the incisions are then closed.
A body lift combines a tummy tuck with a buttock lift. This is a common procedure for those who have had weight loss surgeries (or gastric bypass procedures). A body lift is more extensive and may require a hospital stay; the results can be dramatic.
An incision is made all the way around the body to remove skin both in the front and the back. Significant improvement can be seen in the buttock, back, lateral thighs and abdomen contours.

After your surgery is complete, you will experience some swelling and pain or discomfort. At Edina Plastic Surgery, we are dedicated to making your recovery as comfortable as possible and will work with you to address your pain. We routinely use a long-lasting local anesthetic called Exparel that is injected during surgery and helps minimize pain during the first few days of recovery.

Our recovery nurses will provide information on self-care while at home. You should expect to feel tired and sore. While you may not be able to stand straight, walking a bit in the days following surgery will help with your recovery.

Light activities may be resumed a few weeks after surgery, but full activity may require up to six weeks of recovery time. Although some patients recover faster or slower, those with desk or office jobs can generally return to work in two to three weeks. If your job requires lifting and straining, you may need to be out of work for a longer time.

You can expect some swelling for several months. You may not realize the full benefits of this procedure for six months. Scars may require a year or more to completely mature. You will receive information on how to improve the appearance of your scar. As with any cosmetic procedure, touch ups or repairs may be needed at a later date.

Of the many procedures performed by our surgeons, tummy tucks can provide the best results and most satisfied patients. Controlling your weight and exercising after recovery will be important for maintaining your surgery results and wellness.
